Two years of related laboratory experience including one year as a Laboratory Technician I or equivalent level experience, or Certified Laboratory Assistant (CLA) certification, or Any combination of related post high school education and experience which totals two years.
Preferred Qualifications:
Degree in Microbiology, Biology, Biochemistry or related field. Experience working in a Microbiology lab. Experience working with BSLII pathogens. Experience working with human or animal samples.
Job Description:
The department of Veterinary Microbiology and Preventative Medicine (VMPM) is seeking a qualified Laboratory Technician II to join the Rued Lab.The Rued Lab is interested in host microbiomes and the streptococci that inhabit these niches. Streptococci play a major role in the health of both humans, livestock, and companion animals, and can cause serious diseases. We are particularly interested in the secondary metabolites these streptococci produce, and how streptococci interact with the host and the environment to influence host health.
The Laboratory Technician II in this role will work with a variety of samples types including water, air, and animal samples. This successful candidate is expected to Perform routine assays such as PCR, plating of microorganisms, bacterial growth assays, splitting of culture cells if necessary.Additional duties include routine Lab maintenance , lab clean up, inventory and media preparation.
Hours: Monday Friday, 8:00AM 5:00PM
Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. on an on-going basis without sponsorship.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
Records data from somewhat complex electrical and mechanical recording and display devices as well as from observations from other tests.
Performs standardized statistical analyses on data as required using computer software programs.
Prepares and may direct the preparation of standardized mixes of chemicals for media, reagents, etc., according to established procedures.
Assembles and dismantles standard laboratory equipment for experiments and instruction.
Cleans and maintains a medium-sized laboratory area and equipment therein, makes inventory reports and performs simple maintenance on complex laboratory equipment.
Maintains supplies and equipment in medium sized laboratory area and reports stock deficiencies.
Distributes incoming freight, laboratory supplies, environmental samples, or biological specimens and packs outgoing sample or specimen containers.
Performs, or may direct performance of, data entry, labeling and processing of laboratory specimens.
Responds to, or may direct response to, telephone inquiries regarding laboratory specimens or samples.
Investigates and resolves laboratory questions with minimum guidance.
Assists in training of laboratory staff.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Knowledge of care and use of laboratory equipment.
Knowledge of principles of sanitation, health hazards, and the necessary precautionary measures.
Knowledge of standard cleaning techniques and equipment and supplies required.
Knowledge of keyboarding and computer data entry skills.
