The position for the Technical Director (TD) in Microbiology falls under the Hospital Systems Operations (HSO) Division of Labcorp. This division manages hospital and outpatient laboratories for several Ascension hospitals in ten states (including Ascension St John at Grosse-Point/Detroit Area), as well as four Labcorp regional outreach full-service laboratories with state of the art Microbiology and molecular testing. The TD will address overarching technical issues that require technical expertise in Clinical Microbiology. The TD will interact with the leadership and medical directors of individual hospital laboratories within the HSO division. They will collaborate with Operational, Quality and Medical teams to ensure superlative Infectious Disease testing services.
This position allows for the candidate to work remotely for a significant percentage of their time, as long as defined time is covered in-person at the Ascension St. John facility.
The Divisional TD for HSO in Microbiology will have specific onsite responsibilities for Ascension's Saint John Microbiology laboratory located at Grosse Pointe/ Greater Detroit area in Michigan. Ascension Saint John is a 700+ bed full-service hospital with an active pathology residency program and infectious diseases fellowship program. Collaborative and consultative work with infectious diseases physicians and medical directors is required as is participation in hospital-based committees and programs, and mentoring of pathology residents and infectious disease fellows in MI is expected.
The role requires a strong background in Medical and Public Health microbiology. A fellowship in Clinical Microbiology , and board certification in medical microbiology is required.
Job Responsibilities:
Effectively communicate with clients, physicians, pathologists, medical directors, and laboratory staff.
Lead with credibility by building rapport with medical doctors and Labcorp clients.
Consistently provide clients with definitive answers based on technical knowledge or conducted research.
Attend client meetings, as necessary, to support business development or address customer's concerns.
Collaborate with Labcorp corporate team of Discipline Directors and senior staff to implement and continuously enhance Labcorp's SOPS, Quality, and Service goals.
Cultivate a culture of world- class operational and quality performance.
Ensure the accuracy of results for all testing including personnel and instrument performance.
Partner with Quality Assurance to ensure continuous compliance with regulatory requirements. Guide the implementation of new assays and instrumentation.
Participate in, review, and approve validation studies, providing accurate and timely data.
Stay current with scientific advances and clinical literature, offering perspectives on improvements, such as the effectiveness of patient reports.
Job Requirements:
PhD in Life Sciences.
ABMM certification or eligibility to sit for the ABMM certification. (Required)
Fellowship in a Clinical Microbiology program (Required).
Background in Medical and Public Health Microbiology (Preferred)
Prior experience or ability to instruct and teach pathology residents and infectious diseases fellows.
Depth and breadth of clinical experience understanding validation, quality management, proficiency testing, CLIA standards, and operational efficiency and effectiveness.
Deductive reasoning/analytical skills to achieve resolution to customer inquiries or laboratory opportunities/issues.
Influence and leadership skills to work with laboratory staff, developing capabilities and engagement in problem-solving skill development.
Travel will be required- 25% (minimum of 1 week a month in Detroit)
Additional travel may be required.
Preferred Requirements:
1-2 years of related experience (Preferred)
Experience in a hospital system (Highly Desired)
Pay Range:
Minimum 125k- Maximum 150k
