Job Description

The Clinical Lab Services Technician works in the Clinical Diagnostics Laboratory within the Veterinary Medical Center. Technicians are responsible for all aspects of processing, testing and reporting results of patients and research specimens. Some of their responsibilities include but are not limited to: data entry and tracking of specimens and testing requests in the laboratory information management system; performs routine and specialized laboratory testing (e.g. microscopy, microbial identification, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, immunoassays, molecular characterization, among others); prepares culture media and reagents as needed; aids in the development of new and the update of current laboratory SOPs; communicates with students, faculty, clinical staff, and reference laboratories; prepares samples and paperwork for shipping to referral laboratories; cleans and maintains equipment and instruments; assists in laboratory inventory (tracking and ordering of supplies); participates and complies with quality control activities. Moreover, technicians are expected to explain, discuss, and demonstrate proper microbiological procedures and techniques to residents, visiting scientists, and students in veterinary medical science training programs. Hours vary based upon laboratory schedule and case workload including rotating weekends, holidays, and evenings. Availability to work overtime when necessary based on caseload.

Minimum Education - Bachelor's Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience with a Major in microbiology or biology

Required Qualifications

Experience Desired: One or more years of work experience in a clinical microbiology lab, veterinary diagnostic lab or public health laboratory; experience with medical, veterinary or laboratory database/information system; experience in sterile technique and handling biological specimens. Familiarity with veterinary medicine and or infectious and zoonotic diseases; familiarity with QC/QA laboratory systems; familiarity with serological and molecular techniques. Experience working in fast-paced environments, under pressure, and in stressful situations while maintaining a professional demeanor and appropriate communication skills with clients and other team members. Experience working on weekends, nights, and/or holiday hours.

Physical Requirements: Standing for long periods of time; pushing/pulling/lifting up to 25 pounds; sitting/staring at computer screens for long periods of time; exposure to animal dander, fur, tissues, body fluids, and infectious/zoonotic agents; exposure to needle sticks, hazardous chemicals, and/or biohazardous waste; exposure to unpleasant odors; ability to use hand(s) for repetitive motions including single grasping, pushing & pulling and fine manipulation on a daily basis; ability to have long periods of visual concentration and attention.

Requires weekend, nights, and/or holiday hours. This is a TEMPORARY position for an assignment up to 6 months. Extension of the appointment is based on organizational need.

Hiring Range: $23.65 - $29.54 per hour. This position is eligible for shift differential pay up to an additional $2.50 per hour based on shift.
