Job Description and Duties
Research Scientist II, III, IV, V; Research Scientist Supervisor I
Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.
The Research Scientist (RS) III (Microbiological Sciences) promotes biosafety and accident prevention measures using a variety of intervention strategies including guidance documents, seminars, training exercises, audits, and individual mentoring of employees. The RS III will receive general direction from the Infectious Diseases Laboratory Branch (IDLB) Chief, and Viral and Rickettsial Disease Laboratory and Infant Botulism Treatment and Prevention Program Chiefs. The RS III monitors and coordinates safety and compliance activities; identifies potential areas of vulnerability and risk; develops and reviews risk assessments and reports on a regular basis; and develops and implements corrective action plans as directed. The RS III also provides support for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) compliance with good lab practices and other applicable federal and state regulatory standards; works closely with all stakeholders on Richmond Campus with regards to laboratory biosafety and compliance issues; and takes lead in the systematic investigations and remediation of any laboratory biosafety incidents. The RS III also implements all regulations related to Select Agents (SA), including the Tier 1 program and functions as an Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO). The RS III is the designated IDLB liaison with relevant partners within the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and local and federal agencies for laboratory compliance, and safety and security issues. The RS III will work closely with CDPH management, and internal and external public health partners at the federal, state, and local levels serving as a subject matter expert; providing independent scientific recommendations and consultation; leading project coordination; and planning and developing applicable scientific safety policies.
The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Manager, Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) Program Chief.
Up to 10% travel may be required.
Background Check and/or Fingerprints clearance: Bureau of Investigation Clearance.
Requires to work in a Biosafety Level 3 environment (requires special, additional Personal Protective Equipment).
