The Department of Microbiology & Immunology at Stanford University seeks candidates who hold a doctoral degree in broadly defined areas of microbiology and/or immunology to join the department as an Assistant Professor in the University Tenure Line. We are particularly interested in, but not limited to, candidates with experience with molecular mechanistic, quantitative genomic, systems biological, and theoretical approaches to address compelling biological questions related to pathogenesis and symbiosis.

The predominant criterion for appointment in the University Tenure Line is a major commitment to research and teaching. The successful candidate must have demonstrated true distinction (or the promise of achieving true distinction) in research, and the capability of sustaining first-rate performance (or the promise of this) in teaching.

Typically, individuals appointed as Assistant Professors in the UTL will have completed at least one or two years of postdoctoral research experience. Their accomplishments during graduate and postgraduate training should already have stamped them as creative and promising investigators. If these individuals have not had formal teaching experience, they should have demonstrated during their training a commitment to develop the skills necessary for first-rate teaching.

We expect the successful candidate to establish a thriving laboratory performing creative, cutting-edge, foundational research and providing a supportive environment for training the next generation of scientists and leaders. Responsibilities will also include teaching and mentoring a broadly diverse group of trainees at the undergraduate, postbaccalaureate, graduate, and post-doctoral levels and contributing to a culture that promotes diversity, equity, compassion, and inclusion through accountability, openness, fairness, and respect.

The Department of Microbiology & Immunology is a collaborative community of over 200 individuals, including 16 primary and 24 secondary faculty with Ph.D. training, M.D. training, or both, and chaired by Professor Denise Monack. We share a common passion for research and learning and a commitment to inclusion. Our laboratories study mechanisms of replication, pathogenesis, and symbiosis of bacteria, viruses, and eukaryotic infectious agents using diverse high- and low-throughput approaches, including stem cell biology and chemical biology and through the lenses of innate and acquired immunity. Many of our faculty are members of multi-disciplinary, university-wide research initiatives, such Stanford Bio-X, ChEM-H, and the Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub.
