SRA 3 (Biotechnology Research Associate)Job Summary
Under general supervision perform molecular-based diagnostic testing, assay development, assay monitoring, and assay evaluations using PCR and related technologies, including the extraction of RNA and DNA from clinical veterinary specimens and use of molecular techniques for detection, identification, typing, and phylogenetic analysis of veterinary pathogens. Provide backup support for laboratory management as needed. In consultation with academic supervisor independently manages special projects and is responsible for section's test development and validation program.
RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. The position can be filled prior to the removal date.This position is not eligible for remote work, due to the nature of the essential responsibilities.POSITION INFORMATION

PHYSICAL DEMANDSBe able to perform repetitive motions; pipetting.
Must wear laboratory required/supplied PPE and participate in Health Surveillance Program.
Work with constant interruptions and distractions, traffic and noise from telephone, section activity, etc
This position is subject to prophylactic vaccination for rabies, as well as medical surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
Tolerate strong odors and the sight of exposed animal tissues and blood products, and to handle/dispose of infectious materials.
May, at times, work with or be in areas where biohazardous and chemical materials and infectious diseases are present. Specific hazards of the position are, but are not limited to salmonella, Listeria, E. coli, Campylobacter, hot acids, bases, ethers and other chemicals.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThis position is not eligible for remote work, due to the nature of the essential responsibilities.
Due to the potential work with poultry diseases, ownership and handling of birds is not allowed.
Electronic devices, such as cell phone, iPod, etc., usage will be restricted inside the lab.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 5:00pm (Work schedule might be slightly different during the training period)
Work flexible schedule/overtime as needed to complete projects and meet deadlines.
Mandatory weekend and holiday rotation.
Restricted/Limited vacation during peak workload periods (i.e. Outbreaks, Fiscal Close, Audits Periods, etc.)
Occasional travel to CAHFS branch laboratories, conferences, etc.
Ability to complete Select Agent background clearance procedures.

This is not a research position. The position is located in a diagnostic laboratory where quality control and assurance as well as meticulous working habits are essential.
Per the terms and agreements of the department's contracts and grants, the position requires signing of a Confidentiality Agreement or Non-Disclosure Agreement regarding testing and client information.
QUALIFICATIONSRequired:
- Strong background in infectious diseases and infectious disease pathology, with applicable knowledge and skills in virology, molecular biology, genetics, and immunology.
- Demonstrated recent skills to perform molecular-based diagnostic testing.
- Strong background in molecular assay development.
- Advanced understanding and skill in project design, test evaluation, and test validation.
- Skills to perform molecular techniques and micro-techniques in a veterinary diagnostic laboratory including diagnostic biotechnology methods, virus purification, protein profiles, working with minute quantities of DNA and RNA; perform electrophoresis; standard and real time PCR/primer and probe design/hybridization; nucleic acid and protein conjugation; nucleic acid sequence analysis; nucleic acid extraction and purification; molecular cloning; and phylogenetic analysis.
- Communication skills (written and oral) to prepare data and provide scientific presentations related to test development and validation.
- Skills to adhere to diagnostic lab quality assurance and control procedures and standards and implement the same during assay development and enhancement. Ability to work with remote laboratory teams.
Preferred:
- Creative abilities to develop new approaches and techniques for specific diagnostic applications.
- Ability to effectively manage, organize and prioritize the flow of case materials, maintaining acceptable turnaround times.
