Job Description: Spring 2021 BIO 400/600 – Advances in Biotechnology Research & Ideas, 3 Credits What is going on in biotechnology, in the real world, right now? This topical course explores a variety of cutting-edge biotechnology research areas. The particular subject matter varies from semester to semester, based on the most recent advances in biotechnology. Topics include gene therapy/gene editing, personalized medicine, stem cells/regenerative medicine, bioremediation, environmental and sustainability biotechnology, optogenetics, nanotechnology, immunotherapy, and many others. Readings are drawn primarily from current scientific journal articles. The course is student-centered and project-based, in order to encourage students to develop a broad understanding of what biotechnology can be used for, while pursuing aspects of the field that interest them most. Emphasis is placed on creatively and critically applying basic principles of biotechnology to solve problems that matter. It will meet synchronously online on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:00am – 12:20pm eastern time.
