Opportunity to join a highly dynamic research group engaged in biological research in a laboratory setting. The Senior Research Technician performs and assists with complex research studies, experiments, and assays primarily involving work with rodent models of disease.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintains animal (mouse) breeding colony and maintains up to date records in an appropriate database. Assures compliance with all aspects of animal. Assists with training others on approved protocols.
Performs research protocols following standard methods and procedures. Enters data into spreadsheets and databases and maintains current data files on research projects. Performs preliminary statistical analysis and graphing of data.
Performs experiments with animals (rodents) including PCR genotyping, monitoring of infection following challenge with microorganisms, and isolation of tissue samples and/or cells for in vitro analysis.
Performs isolation of DNA from cells and tissue samples. Performs PCR and gel electrophoresis analyses for genotyping. Maintains database for genotyping records.
Provides training for other lab personnel in order to facilitate complex experiments with animals. Provides technical support by assisting other members of the lab or collaborators with animal experiments.
Assures compliance with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
Applicant Special Instructions:
This position works in a laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and work with research animals (rodents).
Master’s degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
Prior experience working with animals and/or microorganisms.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
Familiarity with basic laboratory math calculations, formulation of solutions, and processing of quantitative data.
Working knowledge of computer software, spreadsheets, database entry, and general lab equipment.
The hiring range for this position is $17.00 - $22.96 per hour.
