Department Description The Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology is a basic science Department in the School of Medicine. The departmental faculty teach undergraduate, graduate and medical students and perform research in their specialized areas of interest. This position is in the research laboratory of Dr. Janine LaSalle. THIS IS NOT AN H1- B OPPORTUNITY ResponsibilitiesThe Staff Research Associate responsibilities include maintaining experimental mouse colonies and managing collaborations with other research groups, the UC Davis Mouse Biology Program, and the UC Davis Genome Center core facilities. Performs specialized experimental procedures in genetics and molecular biology such as DNA isolation, genotyping PCR, Western blotting and tissue cultures. Other responsibilities include training and supervising undergraduates in routine lab maintenance tasks, maintaining and ordering laboratory supplies, coordinating and recording safety training, ordering mice, and maintaining and updating IACUC protocols as well as UC Davis EHS biological user authorizations (BUAs). Obtains quotes for purchases for bulk supplies and equipment. Required Qualifications
Experience with lab animal handling and maintenance with current ACU101 and mouse handling with lab animal skills training offered through the UC Davis Office of Research or comparable certification of training.
Experience coordinating lab animal studies to use and understanding the UC Davis Teaching and Research Animal Care Services (TRACS) including writing Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols, declaring animals using the IACUC Animal Tracking System (ATS) and writing NIH Vertebrate Animal Section of NIH grants.
Experience breeding, weaning, dissecting rodents and keeping records of multiple strains of lab mice.
Ability to submit and update a UC Davis Environmental Health Services (EHS) Biological Use Authorization (BUA) protocol for the lab.
Familiar with UC Davis EHS requirements for lab safety including training lab members in proper lab safety procedures, maintaining safety training records, submitting waste pick up requests and working with UC Davis Fire, UCD Medical School and EHS staff
Experience or training to place orders through UC Davis Aggie Buy and the UC Davis Prepurchasing systems
Extensive knowledge in biological sciences demonstrated through education and/or experience
Experience with the concepts, principles and responsible conduct of research
Practical experience and expertise in DNA isolation, PCR analysis, Western blotting, gel electrophoresis, microscopy and digital image analysis
