The Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering in the Gillings School of Global Public Health at the University of North Carolina is seeking to hire a tenure track faculty member at the Assistant or Associate Professor level with expertise in microbiology or microbial process engineering. With this hire, the Department seeks to advance its well-established research and educational programs in environmental microbiology and to build public health resilience to climate and environmental change. Nearly two-thirds of the world's population is expected to be living under water stressed conditions by 2025. Shifting rainfall patterns, increased hydrological variability, and rising temperatures will alter the geographic range of pathogens, undermine water security, and threaten the sustainability and security of food, energy, and water systems. Together, floods, extreme weather events, water scarcity and poor water quality will increase the spread of disease and become a growing factor in migration, civil unrest, and conflict at home and abroad.
The successful candidate may work in a variety of areas: e.g., to characterize susceptible populations and microbial exposures, design effective interventions to reduce microbial risks, address water safety, infectious disease transmission, environmental or occupational exposures, design more resilient/distributed water treatment, and/or microbial methods for resource recovery. An interest in providing scholarly leadership in UNC's Water Institute is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary collaborative community of scholars at Gillings, within UNC, and across the North Carolina research triangle.
Over the next several years, the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering (ESE) and Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill plan to hire several tenure track faculty members to address public health resilience to climate and environmental change. WHO lists climate change as the #1 threat to global health. Appropriately, climate change and public health protection are also central to all five pressing challenges identified in the National Academies (NRC) report on Environmental Engineering for the 21st Century. Climate change can contribute to droughts, floods, heat waves and extreme weather events, which in turn impact air pollution, access to safe drinking water, toxic releases, food and nutrition, infectious and non-communicable diseases, migration and conflict, and exacerbate health inequities. As environmental scientists and engineers located within the top public school of public health, ESE is ideally positioned to address these pressing challenges. The Department has 98 years of experience and over 2000 alumni designing effective solutions for public health protection. We have internationally recognized faculty in air pollution, climate change and health, global water policy, infectious disease and microbiology, systems engineering, environmental health and children's health. We are home to UNC's Water Institute, Center on Financial Risk in Environmental Systems, the Institute for Environmental Health Solutions, and participate in UNC's strong university-wide environmental and climate change communities. Since its founding, the Gillings School of Global Public Health has been a consistent advocate for health equity locally and globally.
This position’s responsibilities will include the following: develop an independent program of research including sustainable external sources of support, seek interdisciplinary collaborations, teach at least two courses per year that address Departmental needs, advise graduate and undergraduate student research, and engage in Departmental and professional service activities commensurate with rank and experience.
Education and Experience:
Qualifications include the following: first author publications in respected peer-reviewed journals, strong written and oral science communication skills for specialist and public audiences, cultural competence and commitment to inclusive excellence, depth of knowledge about environmental/public health microbiology, curiosity and interest in learning, critical analysis skills, interpersonal skills and leadership potential.
