The Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for a Laboratory Specialist of Microbiology and Infectious Diseases. Under the direction of Assistant Professor Jacqueline Kimmey, the selected candidate will assist with research projects focusing on innate immunity to bacterial pathogens and provide technical support for researchers. Research activities will include sterile technique, tissue culture, PCR, plasmid purification, bacterial transformation, and may include animal studies in mice and zebrafish. The Laboratory Specialist will also be required to perform nominal lab management duties, such as ordering supplies, making buffers and reagents, and ensuring compliance with lab policies and biosafety (EH&S) regulations. The position will require the incumbent to successfully follow both verbal and written directions, keep organized records, and respectfully communicate and collaborate with a diverse team of students, faculty, and staff.
Notice: Although all individuals can safely work in the lab, this research utilizes pathogenic bacteria, which may pose an increased risk to immunocompromised individuals.
Applicants experienced in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: animal models; mouse handling and dissection; zebrafish studies; flow cytometry; biosafety level 2 procedures; Streptococcus pneumoniae; and/or bacterial genetics.
SALARY Minimum $39,500 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
B.S. or B.A. (or equivalent foreign degree) in biology, microbiology, immunology, cell biology, biochemistry, or a related field, completed by the time of application.
At least six months of full-time, or one year of part-time, laboratory research experience (achieved at the baccalaureate level and beyond) using standard microbiology and molecular biology techniques.

DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointment will be full-time for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
