The Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology Department (https://www.metx.ucsc.edu/) at the University of California (UCSC) invites applications for an Assistant Project Scientist. Under the direction of Associate Professor Victoria Auerbuch Stone, the selected applicant will contribute to and lead aspects of ongoing research efforts on the bacterial type III secretion system (T3SS). Duties will include assisting with the design and execution of research experiments on the Yersinia and Pseudomonas T3SS; supporting bioinformatics and genomic analysis, composing manuscripts on findings, with the expectation for publication in scientific journals. This position will require the incumbent to successfully work with undergraduate students and manage collaborations with other labs on campus. The successful candidate may also contribute to applications for grants, contracts, and private external funding.
Applicants with expertise in any of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply: experimental and computational experience, expertise in genomics and high throughput sequencing, and/or experience with bacterial genetics.
ACADEMIC TITLE Assistant Project Scientist
SALARY $60,600 - $67,300 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
A PhD (or equivalent foreign degree) in Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Plant Pathology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related field at the time of application.
A minimum of three years' service as a Postdoctoral Scholar/Scientist conducting laboratory research with bacterial type III secretion system (T3SS), bioinformatics, and drug development in a microbiology lab.

DURATION OF POSITION Initial appointment will be full-time for one year, with the possibility of reappointment. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment; a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon the availability of funding.
