Job Description Summary
The Malaria Pathogenesis Laboratory and the Plankton Ecology Laboratory with the Biology Department at Wake Forest University are seeking a qualified and highly motivated individual for a shared Lab Manager position to support research in the realm of host-pathogen interactions. The role will include management and coordination of laboratory and fieldwork, as well as performing biological analyses for a variety of projects studying molecular and chemical interactions between protozoan parasites in human hosts, and viral pathogens in plankton hosts.
The candidate should be willing to supervise teams of students, manage laboratory inventories, implement safety protocols, coordinate field work efforts, maintain microbial cultures, and assist with experimental sampling and biological analyses such as virus isolation, DNA and RNA extractions, PCR, immunofluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. The candidate should be able to troubleshoot experiments, analyze data, and communicate results. Research will be conducted primarily at the Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina, but opportunities may be available for fieldwork within the United States and abroad.
The successful candidate will have a MS degree, including 2+ years of demonstrated experience in laboratory management and microbiology and/ or molecular biology research. Experience in setting up a new laboratory, working as a joint lab manager, conducting field work, and working with bloodborne pathogens is a plus. Excellent organizational, record-keeping and interpersonal skills are desired. This is a full time position for 2 years, with the possibility of extension depending upon funding.
