The Analytical Sciences group within Merck Research Laboratories has an opening for an Associate Principal Scientist within our Microbiology group based in Rahway, NJ. The primary objective of Analytical Sciences, Microbiology (AS-Micro) in MRL is to support the microbial quality of small molecules, vaccines, and biologics from early development through commercialization. To effectively achieve this goal, AS-Micro works collaboratively with many project teams to support all compendial microbial assays (including Bioburden, Microbial Examination Testing, Antimicrobial Preservative Effectiveness, Sterility Testing, Endotoxin Testing, Water Activity, and Environmental Monitoring), risk assessment analysis, method development/qualification, and to provide expertise to project teams and manufacturing facilities when necessary. In addition, this group evaluates new technology for Rapid Microbiology Methods for implementation within the MRL and the commercial space.
The Associate Principal Scientist in the Microbiological group is responsible for executing method development and compendial assays through all phases of product development and to provide support for project teams as applicable. This candidate will also conduct research experiments and investigate new assays or technology to adapt to the current business and industry needs. Finally, this candidate would provide technical oversight for other staff members including training, reviewing notebooks and data, and assisting with laboratory investigations. The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, and have This position requires some remote and light travel to support similar Microbiology laboratory located in West Point, PA.
Education Minimum Requirement:
Ph.D Degree in Biology, Microbiology or relevant discipline with a minimum of 4 years of relevant industry experience.
Master's Degree in Biology, Microbiology or relevant discipline with a minimum of 8 years of relevant industry experience.
Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Microbiology or relevant discipline with a minimum of 12 years of relevant industry experience.
Required Experience and Skills:
Minimum 4 years of industry experience in Microbiology Quality Control and strong knowledge of GMP functions.
Hands on experience with and satisfactory ability for aseptic skills.
Successful candidates must have excellent interpersonal, communication, and collaboration skills.
Strength in delivering results on critical deadlines to support product development programs.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Regulatory knowledge of compendial Microbial Assays is preferred.
Knowledge of Rapid Microbial Methodology and implementation strategy is preferred.
