Job Summary: Milliken is seeking an exceptionally talented Industrial Microbiologist to become the subject matter expert for microbial risk assessment and control within our Chemical Division, which supplies specialty chemicals to industrial and consumer applications. This role has primary responsibility, for support of our existing business, to ensure products meet specifications for biological activity by: coordination of product bioburden testing, recommendation of preservative selection based on product type and application, and manufacturing assistance for appropriate hygiene practices. This role also has responsibility for multiple manufacturing locations to understand biosusceptibility of new products, and formulation recommendations to reduce biosusceptibility, and new antimicrobial products. The position is located at our corporate headquarters in Spartanburg, SC and reports to the Director of Manufacturing. Key Responsibilities:•Microbial quality assurance testingoTesting and setting specifications, demonstrate efficacy, stability, and sensitivityoDesign and validate testing protocolsoPerformance testingoManage microbial lab•PreservationoBiocide package recommendation (global regulations, chemistry stability, performance requirements, etc.)oPreservation strategiesoProduct packaging, sampling, storage, handling• Process validationoAudits (internal and external)oProvide Microbiology and Cleaning & Sanitization training to process personneloRisk assessment and countermeasuresoAssist with product, equipment, and cleaning & sanitization proceduresoMicrobial failure analysis and corrective actions•Product supportoComplaint resolutionoPerformance and Claim validation on anti-microbial productsoTesting protocol validation with major multinationals
Required Education & Skills/Experience•Minimum of Masters’ degree in Microbiology, or Biology with a focus in microbiology •Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in the following:oIn-can preservation of industrial and consumer productsoIndustrial plant process and product hygiene oManaging operation of microbiology lab•Working knowledge and practical experience with good laboratory practices in a microbiology lab environment and competent with techniques such as Gram staining, isolation plating, media preparation, and microorganism identification methods•Have knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and guidelines, including EPA, FDA, and BPR•Experience leading and writing process validation studies•Proven expertise in commercial uses of antimicrobial products and biocides•Have demonstrated leadership by supervising and motivating a team of lab associates•Self-motivated with demonstrated ability to independently define and execute critical studies, and to develop and communicate recommendations•Ability to work in a matrix environment with excellent relationship, networking, and collaboration skills•Exceptional communication skills, with a proven ability to convey complex ideas in a clear, precise, and actionable mannerDesired Education & Skills/Experience•Testing for efficacy of antimicrobials and biocides in consumer treated articles such as textiles, plastics, foams, as well as medical devices, against bacteria and fungi•Understanding and experience with Ames mutagenic assay•Experience with commercializing or supporting antimicrobial products•Formal education or relevant experience in antimicrobials, especially as it relates to their commercial use•Demonstrated cross-functional project leadership experience•Working knowledge of experimental design and statistical methods
