The METX Department at the University of California (UCSC) invites applications for a Specialist in the Department of Microbiology and Environmental Toxicology under the direction of Professor Victoria Auerbuch Stone. The candidate will participate in research on identifying and characterizing small molecule inhibitors of the bacterial type III secretion system or on Yersinia pathogenesis. Duties include assisting lab members with research projects and lab maintenance. The candidate will present data at group meetings, participate in journal clubs, and assist in writing research articles.

Appointment, reappointment, and promotion in this series may be made to the appropriate rank based on such criteria as level of expertise and independence required for the position, professional competence, the complexity of the research responsibilities, the potential for intellectual/scientific contributions to the field, the scope of professional activities, and University and public service.
SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelors in biology or related discipline
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Specific laboratory experience with prokaryotic molecular genetic techniques, PCR, ligation, and DNA preparation. Experience with tissue culture. Good organizational, time management, and problem solving skills; the abilities to perform tasks in a clean and organized manner, to work independently and as part of a team, work accurately, and meet deadlines.

TERM OF APPOINTMENT: Initial appointment is for 1 year. Should the hiring unit propose reappointment, a review to assess performance will be conducted. Reappointment is also contingent upon availability of funding.
