Persephone Biome is an emerging company investigating the impact of the gut microbiome on human disease, and developing live therapeutic products aimed at disease treatment and prevention. We are located at JLabs in San Diego, CA, and recently completed Y Combinator. We are currently seeking a Scientist level Fermentation Engineer/Microbiologist to participate in the development of our novel anti-cancer biotherapeutics from bacteria discovered in the human GI tract.
Job responsibilities are as follows:
•Develop anaerobic fermentation processes for growth and production of anaerobic bacteria
•Support production of live biological therapeutics at experimental and GMP scales
•Perform microbiological studies such as isolation, cultivation and experimental testing of anaerobic and fastidious microbes from the lower GI tract of mouse and human test subjects.
•Help to develop and optimize growth media for the successful and robust propagation of anaerobic bacteria of interest.
•Support the efforts of other lab personnel involved in genome sequencing, transcriptomics and metabolomic studies of anaerobic bacteria and their potential effects on cancer treatment efficacy.
•Provide overall leadership in fermentation and microbiological work, which could include supervisory role in the future.
•Communicate results in oral and written form.
•PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Chemical Engineering or related field. Postdoc or industry experience preferred.
•Demonstrated Fermentation experience and skills in the growth and large-scale production and metabolic study of anaerobic bacteria.
•Direct experience in routine cultivation and study of anaerobic bacteria.
•Knowledge of and familiarity with microbial catabolic and anabolic metabolism and pathways.
•Experience in molecular biology techniques such as gene cloning, DNA sequencing and RNA transcriptomics a plus.
•Expresses independence, leadership, and enthusiasm in support of accomplishing company goals.
