Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Program Manager, Microbiology for the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. The primary purpose of the Program Manager, Microbiology is to serve the Public Health Laboratory Services Microbiology Program and to accomplish its mission and objectives. The microbiology unit is the core of the Public Health Laboratory Services unit, and is responsible in large part for diagnosis of the variety of infectious diseases, surveillance testing and outbreak responses excluding those caused by select agents. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
Leads the Microbiology Laboratory from its current labor intense, manual, culture based processes to a more efficient molecular based, automated technology through new recruits with the necessary skill that can cross train and develop the existing staff.
Functions as a technical supervisor under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1988 (CLIA) and College of American pathologist guidelines.
Responsible for the technical oversight of the microbiology unit comprising of Bacteriology/Enterics, Molecular diagnostics, Special Bacteriology, Sanitary Bacteriology and Serology.
Responsible for quality management, safety and management of federal grants and state agreements.
Manages and assists in the recruitment, development and supervision of staff: conducts performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, coaches, counsels and motivates staff to achieve peak productivity and performance.
Develops and manages the budget for assigned programs.
Regularly monitors relevant key financial indicators and performance metrics.
Ensures compliance with all regulatory agencies.
Guarantees the minimum turnaround time is met to achieve results in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
Supervises, conducts performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, coaches, counsels and motivates staff to achieve peak productivity and performance. Maintains a working knowledge and hands on experience with tests in the unit to ensure continuity of operation.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Master of Science Degree in microbiology or other appropriate biological discipline.
Four (4) years of experience in microbiological analysis or research.
A Doctorate in a microbiological discipline may be substituted for two (2) years of experience indicated above.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Appointee will be required to possess a valid driver’s license as the operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
PHYSICALDEMANDS: Position requires standing, walking, sitting, use of the hands to finger, handle or feel, talk and hear 2/3 of the time, reach with hands and arms over 1/3 of the time, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl under 1/3 of the time. Position requires lifting 1/3 of the time up to 10 pounds, and under 1/3 of the time up to 25 pounds.
WORKENVIRONMENT: Moderate noise environment with some exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to blood borne pathogens requiring the use of personal protective equipment; some potential exposure (less than 1/3 of the time) to hazardous waste.
Candidate must be willing to undergo a Security Risk Assessment which includes a fingerprint criminal background review and drug testing.
