This opportunity in the Department of Molecular Microbiology is in the Lewis lab, a laboratory within the cWIDR (Center for Women’s Infectious Disease Research). The laboratory is located at the Institute of Health Building on the Medical School Campus.
This opportunity is full-time and works approximately 40 hours per week. Hours are generally normal business hours but may vary due to the timing for experiments and other research activity deadlines.
The lab studies microbes of the female reproductive tract that impact women's health. Our work addresses how bacteria handle sugars, and the biology of bacterial isolates and communities. Work in the lab includes culturing of microbes including fastidious anaerobic bacteria and living bacterial communities. We also perform molecular and biochemical studies of microbes and their proteins. There may be opportunities for interaction with patients/research participants.
Successful Applicants should possess 2 out of the 3 following skills:
Microbiology experience including sterile technique.
Biochemistry--mix your own buffers, run and monitor enzymatic reactions, chromatography.
Molecular biology experience and knowledge of PCR, sequencing, cloning, or protein expression.
Applicants with at least a BS degree or equivalent up through a PhD with experience are encouraged to apply.
Demonstrated ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
Willingness to create, modify, and follow protocols.
Willingness to work in teams and independently to accomplish research objectives set by PI and project group.
Ability to discuss complex topics in microbiology, as well as sensitive topics related to women's sexual health.
