Where the Chemistry Happens...
The position is responsible for strengthening the Microbiology & Industrial Biotechnology Research Team in Tarrytown, NY. The team is an integral part of BASF's Fine Chemicals and Biocatalysis Research within the global Specialty Chemical Research Platform.
The team works closely with other research teams, development teams, and business units of BASF, inside and outside the U.S. In addition, the team maintains and supports numerous collaborations with non-BASF partners, including universities and other research organizations.

Formula for Success: You Will...
Be responsible for managing a group of approximately 23 scientists and technicians with focus on the development of new products and/or processes using white biotechnological methods.
Connect with various business units to ensure successful execution of research projects and ensure realization of upside potential.
Scout in the field of white biotechnology and identify opportunities for BASF with emphasis on production of chemicals and strengthening of the technology platform.
Maintain a filled project pipeline.
Manage the group budget totaling approximately $9M.
Represent and connect the group to the global BASF R&D community.
Propose approaches to establish R&D and sales in this field.

Qualifications - BASF recognizes institutions of Higher Education which are accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation or equivalent
Ingredients for Success: What We Look for in You...
Masters Degree in Chemistry, Biology or other relevant scientific field required; Ph.D. preferred, with a minimum of 10 years comprehensive technical expertise in biotechnology required. Prior experience in white biotechnology is also preferred.
At least 7 years of progressive managerial experience leading teams in an R&D environment.
Expertise in managing R&D projects and interacting with relevant application/business groups.
Ability to establish a network into BASF business units regionally, including the Ludwigshafen, Germany headquarters.
Experience with scouting and engaging with potential customers and assessing business cases/models.
Capable of reaching out to the technical/non-technical community through understanding of white biotechnology, technology, production, scale-up.
Familiarity with cost management, IP management, and business development.
Excellent communication skills, with experience in change management highly preferred.
